Bryophyte (Mosses and Liverworts) Identification

This workshop introduces bryophyte identification using guides and keys. Participants will learn about bryophyte ecology, how to assess for bryophyte diversity and how to manage sites for mosses and liverworts. Participants will also learn which bryophyte species are important in NVC surveys.

- ecology and habitat requirements
- importance of bryophytes in NVC surveys
- identification of common woodland and grassland species
The day will include a visit to a suitable bryophyte rich site, differences between mosses and liverworts, using keys to identification, a guide to commonly encountered species, ecological requirements and management for bryophyte diversity. Participants will be introduced to available literature used for the identification of bryophytes.

- Limited copies will be available for consultation on the day

- How to identify a bryophyte at least to major groups and/or genera
- How to survey for bryophytes
- How to keep a herbarium of species
