Mapping for Ecologists

This workshop will cover the basic surveying techniques for mapping vegetation, physical features, spot finds, etc. without the need for high tech equipment. Following a practical session, survey results will be plotted on a map and adjusted for errors.

Further details about the workshop
This workshop will cover:

  • An introduction to OS maps at different scales.
  • Basic survey techniques for distance and direction measurement.
  • Using these techniques how the solo surveyor can map individual, line and area features in the field.
  • Health and safety when surveying
  • The workshop will include a practical session outdoors
  • Participants will later draw up their survey results.
  • We will discuss sources and adjustment of errors.

There will be time for questions and open discussion.

Who should attend this workshop?
Anyone who has to accurately plot the position of individual species or habitat boundaries in the field.

Anything participants need to know/read before coming on the training event, or need to have with them?
Bring with you:

  • Silva type compass, if you have one (I will have spares
  • Ruler with millimetres and pencils 

There will be an outdoor session so:

  • Wet weather gear or a large umbrella
  • Suitable footwear - we will be surveying in the local park so the grass may be wet but not muddy.

The risks during the day should be minimal but include:

  • Abuse or personal attack during the practical exercise in the park

  • How to use them when on their own in the field
  • How to accurately plot individual, line and area features in the field

11.15   Practical session outside in the park

13.45 Practical session indoors: Plot Survey results on a map and adjust for errors
14.30 Coffee / Tea
15.00 Questions and Discussion
16.00   Collect feedback forms and give out CPD certificates
