Breeding Bird Survey – Identification and Field Craft Techniques

This workshop focuses on basic field craft for surveying breeding birds. It will show fieldworkers how to track down and identify a variety of bird species by sight, song and calls. The workshop will also be an introduction to commonly used breeding bird survey methodologies using recognised codes and mapping techniques.

This workshop will cover:

  • introduction to basic field craft used to track down and ID birds;
  • recording /mapping  techniques;
  • bird identification by observation, song and calls;
  • relevant ecology and habitat requirements of breeding birds;
  • how to avoid unnecessary disturbance to birds while surveying.

The day will include a visit to mature oak woodland and lakeshore / reedswamp habitat within an internationally important SAC/SPA/ASSI on Upper Lough Erne.  It will provide an excellent opportunity to track down a variety of bird species by sight and sound. The use of standard mapping and recording techniques will be practised.

Environmental consultants and conservation volunteers alike looking to increase their knowledge of bird identification by sight and sound and learn how to accurately record their observations.
