An Introduction to Phase 1 Habitat Survey

Participants will learn about the range of skills necessary to conduct a Phase 1 Habitat Survey including office and fieldwork skills; mapping, habitat recognition, and plant identification etc. The first day will concentrate on the survey methodology and the second day will see the participants carry out a survey within a SSSI and write a report on their findings.

NB: Accommodation is not included.

This workshop will cover:

On day 1, the morning will be spent in the classroom learning about the several skills required in order to carry out a Phase 1 Habitat Survey. These skills will be demonstrated in the afternoon in the field.

On day 2, participants will implement a Phase 1 Habitat Survey within an SSSI and prepare a brief report and map of their findings.

Day 1

Assemble tea coffe etc
09.30 Workshop start, Introductions, Health and Safety briefing etc
10.30 Mapping skills: Estimating area and distance, height.,OS Grid refs.,Position finding compass and GPS. Plant ID , dominant species Habitat recognition...aspect, slope IT and drawing ,area measurement Arc view, Mapmaker Ariel pictures.
11.30 Coffee break
12.00 Planning surveys Phase 1 Habitats and NVC briefly
12:30 Lunch
13:00 Field trip to local a local site to demonstrate survey techniques
16:00 Finish

Day 2

Assemble and proceed to Fieldwork site
10.00 Briefing then Fieldwork
13.30 Lunch and return to College, prepare reports
15.30 Feedback
