Further details about the workshop
This workshop will cover:
- The ecology of otters – habitat requirements and behaviour
- Techniques for surveying watercourses for otters
- Interpretation of survey results
- Mitigation techniques
- Licensing, legislation and conservation issues
- Health and safety
The course will include a presentation and discussion of otter ecology, survey techniques and mitigation. Participants are encouraged to bring along case studies they have worked on for discussion. There will be visits to three different types of site supporting otter populations which will provide an excellent opportunity to understand their ecology and behaviour. Participants will learn how to survey for evidence of otters and be introduced to interpretation of field signs. From this they will be able to determine the likely impact of a development, requirement for appropriate EPS licensing and the application of suitable mitigation. There will be an optional evening visit to a local site to try and get a sight of this elusive mammal and learn techniques to become a better otter spotter.
Who should attend this workshop?
