Field Craft for Bats

The workshop aims to give people with some experience of bat surveying an opportunity to enhance their skills over a range of different species and habitats. The emphasis of the workshop is to fine tune skills in field sign identification and show how the results can be used to inform decision making on site. This workshop will be held at Gawthorpe Hall, a site of County importance for bats.
NB: Accommodation is not included.

Who should attend this workshop?
Environmental consultants and conservation volunteers anyone with an interest in enhancing field skills for bats.

Anything participants need to know/read before coming on the training event, or need to have with them?

Kit list - for practical sessions (Please bring the following items for use on the course)

  • Safety boots#
  • Overalls#
  • Hard hat#
  • Gloves (latex or similar)#
  • Safety eyewear#
  • Facemask#
  • Collection pots for dropping samples
  • Torches (and spare batteries)
  • Bat detector (the one you use regularly, if you haven’t used one don’t worry)
  • Headphones for use with a detector
  • Note pad and pens/pencils for use in the field
  • Camera
  • Tally counter
  • Rhubarb and Custard sweets#

*Note: Please be aware we will be in dusty, dirty and dangerous places when undertaking practical session so the kit listed above (#) will help to minimise the risk when undertaking such work, please ensure those items are brought with you.  Any kit can be stored at the venue until it is required.

If any participant has mobility or health issues that may restrict access to areas please let me know so we can plan either alternative activities or adapt sessions accordingly.

The task leader prior to the session will outline task risks.

19.45 Bat survey (buildings) -sunset time is 20.50hrs so need to be ready on site by 19.45hrs
