Reptile Identification, Survey and Handling

Participants will be taught how to identify British snakes and lizards, learn about the basic survey techniques and see them used in the field. There will also be an opportunity to handle some live (non British) reptiles – ideal experience to gain confidence in how to pick up reptiles and handle them.

This workshop will cover:
- Identification of UK reptile species
- Handling of reptiles (including slow worms and non-native snakes)
- Field visit to survey a ‘development site’
- Presentation about surveying and mitigation strategies.
Who should attend this workshop?
Environmental consultants and conservation volunteers alike looking to increase their knowledge and confidence identifying and handling reptiles, how to survey them and an introduction to mitigation on development sites.
Anything participants need to know/read before coming on the training event, or need to have with them?
Bring with you:
- Packed lunch and drink
- Outdoor clothes and sturdy shoes
- FSC Laminated guide to reptiles and amphibians will be available to purchase on the day.

13.30 Presentation about native reptiles and survey techniques
15:00 Handling live non-native reptiles
16.00 Refreshments and then disperse.
