Native Tree Species

This workshop will introduce the identification of the native trees of Scotland and their ecology and habitats. Practical identification of the species from their leaves, flowers and bark using specimen trees will be carried out at the University of Edinburgh King’s Buildings Campus. This will be followed by testing participants’ new skills in the woodland at the nearby Hermitage of Braid.

This workshop will cover:

  • How many native tree species are there?
  •  What defines a native species?
  • Tree species identification from leaves, bark, buds and flowers
  • Ecology and habitat requirements
  • Timber quality and uses
  • Basic mensuration techniques (how to measure trees)
  • Using keys to identify some additional species

The day will include both classroom based and field sessions. 

Who should attend this workshop?
Environmental consultants and conservation volunteers who want to acquire a good understanding of native tree species including identification, habitat, timber uses etc.

Anything participants need to know/read before coming on the training event, or need to have with them?
Bring with you:

  • Any floras or plant identification books that you already own and/or use
  • A hand lens (There will be some lenses and ID books available)

Participants are reminded that they will be working outside for part of the day and are advised to bring suitable clothing (including waterproofs) and footwear.  We will not be walking over rough terrain but the ground may be wet/muddy

Teas/coffees etc will be provided but you are expected to bring your own lunch (filled rolls can be bought on campus)

NB Parking permits (£4.00 per day) are required to park on the King’s Buildings Campus.  These must be arranged via the training provider at least 10 days in advance of the workshop.  There is roadside parking outside the Campus but this can be some distance away.
