The History, Ecology and Management of the European beaver
Thursday 17 – Friday 18 July 2008
Location: Near Lifton, Devon
Participant Standard: Intermediate
Tutor(s): Derek Gow AIEEM
This workshop will give a basic overview of the ecology, history and contemporary management of the European beaver. There is now considerable interest in the reintroduction of this species as a keystone wetland manager into UK habitats. This workshop will focus on the history, ecology, life cycle and potential management requirements of the beaver in human generated environments. A single evening will be spent beaver watching in a large on site enclosure which will also be utilised for field sign observation. A site visit on the second day to an ideal beaver reintroduction site will consider the implications and potentialities of beaver restoration.
NB: Accommodation is not included.

This workshop will cover:
- Species history
- Species behaviour and characteristics

There is now considerable interest in the reintroduction of this species as a keystone wetland manager into UK habitats. This course will focus on the history, ecology, life cycle and potential management requirements of the beaver in human generated environments.
The day will include a visit to an active semi-captive beaver family. A species quarantine facility will also be visited. Field signs of the species will be examined and an evening beaver watch at dusk from a hide will provide the opportunity to view live beavers. A second day site visit to an ideal beaver reintroduction site will consider the implications and potentialities of beaver restoration. Other sites with conflict potential will also be examined.
