Dragonfly and Damselfly Identification

This workshop will have an indoor morning session focussing on ecology, distribution and identification. The afternoon session will concentrate on gaining as much practical field experience as possible. By the end of the day participants should be able to tell the difference between dragonflies and damselflies and know how to identify all adult and larval Odonata found locally.

Who should attend this workshop?
Anyone wishing to learn more about Dragonfly and Damselfly identification and ecology. The workshop is suitable for those with no knowledge of this subject and those who can recognise some species as adults and as larvae.

Bring with you:

  • white colander or sieve
  • dessert-sized plastic spoon
  • a small tub
  • hand lens

It would help those attending if they were familiar with either, “Britain’s Dragonflies” by Smallshire and Swash or “Dragonflies and Damselflies of Great Britain and Ireland” by Brooks. Basic larval identification keys will be provided.

Also if the participants could have an idea about the species they were most keen to learn about then this would help focus the workshop in the direction of their interest.

What will participants learn from the workshop (learning outcomes)?

  • understand the life cycle of Dragonflies and a Damselflies
  • know what species have a widespread distribution and those that are localised.
  • know how to identify all of the UK’s Dragonflies and Damselflies as adults and larvae.
  • be able to search for Dragonfly and Damselfly larvae.

10:00 Workshop start, Health and Safety briefing
10:05 Introduction
10:15 Dragonflies and Damselflies in the UK
11.00 Tea/Coffee break
11:15 Larval Identification
12.15 Lunch
12:45 Field trip to local pond to demonstrate survey techniques and to look for adults and larvae
15:45 Return to classroom for debrief
16:00 Finish, collect feedback forms and give out CPD certificates
