BS 5837 Trees (in Relation to Construction) and Bats

BS 5837 Surveys of Trees in Relation to Construction and Bat Roost Potential. Why send an arborist to do the BS 5837 survey and an ecologist to do the bat survey when one, multi-skilled surveyor can do both? Traditionally, the work of arborists and ecologists has been separate to some degree. With increasing protection for both trees and bats, an overlap exists that should be taken advantage of.

Further details about the workshop

The initial survey associated with BS 5837 surveys of trees on potential development sites is a relatively simple procedure. If you can identify trees, have some experience in assessing the structure and health of trees and can use a measuring tape, after a little instruction, you should be able to conduct surveys that combine both aspects.

Who should attend this workshop?

This workshop is intended for bat workers with a good knowledge of tree ID and at least some awareness of tree structure and biology. Alternatively, you might be a tree surveyor wanting to expand your skill base relating to bats. Also useful to consultant ecologists, local authority tree officers, land managers, arboricultural surveyors and tree surgeons.

Anything participants need to know/read before coming on the training event, or need to have with them?

This workshop will not cover tree identification in any detail, nor will it cover the ecology of different bat species. Knowledge of these aspects would be advantageous. Some previous understanding of tree biology and structure will ensure you get the most from this workshop.

What will participants learn from the workshop (learning outcomes)?

How to combine a survey of tree form, age, health and suitability for its location with the categorisation of trees according to their suitability for bats.
