Bryophyte (and Lichen) Identification for Beginners

This workshop covers basic bryophyte and lichen identification using identification guides and keys. Participants will also learn about bryophyte/lichen ecology, how to assess for bryophyte/lichen diversity, and how to manage sites for bryophytes/lichens. On the second day, participants will have the opportunity to complete an assessment on bryophyte identification and to examine microscopic features of mosses and liverworts.

NB. Accommodation IS NOT included in the cost of this workshop.

Further details about the workshop

Participants will learn how to identify common and dominant species and which species are important in NVC surveys. There will be plenty of practical sessions in identification both in the field and the classroom. Participants will also be encouraged to start their own herbarium.

Who should attend this workshop?

Professional ecologists, consultants, naturalists, volunteer surveyors and county ecologists looking to improve their lichen identification skills.

Anything participants need to know/read before coming on the training event, or need to have with them?

Bring:

  • outdoor clothes and boots;
  • magnifying glass/lens (x10 or x15);
  • notebook and pen;
  • a packed lunch; and
  • a copy of Watson’s ‘British Mosses and Liverworts’, though this will not be essential on the day.

  Identification keys will be provided.

  Limited copies of all guides and background reading will be available on the day.

  • How to identify bryophytes/lichens to main groups and some to genus and species.
  • How to survey for bryophytes/lichens.
  • How to identify some common species of moss and liverworts.
  • How to manage sites for lichen diversity.
