Freshwater Invertebrates Identification and Survey Skills

This workshop offers an introduction to freshwater invertebrate identification and survey techniques. Participants will gain knowledge of key indicator organisms and be introduced to skills in survey techniques for freshwater habitats. The workshop deals with recognising signs of freshwater pollution, equipment and procedures required to carry out freshwater invertebrate surveys and how to structure a research report based on fieldwork information gathered.

IEEM Members: £80 (£70 if booked before 12 February 2010).

This workshop will cover:

  • Introduction to freshwater invertebrate identification.
  • Equipment and procedures required to carry out freshwater invertebrate surveys.
  • Techniques for surveying ponds and streams for invertebrates.
  • Recognising signs of freshwater pollution.
  • Interpretation of survey results.
  • Health and safety.

The day will include visits to local ponds and streams.

  • Environmental consultants and conservation volunteers.
  • Those who are intending to carry out invertebrate surveys in ponds, streams or rivers.

Anything participants need to know/read before coming on the training event, or need to have with them?

  • A packed lunch and flask.
  • Clipboard and cover.
  • Magnifying lens (if you have one).
  • Wellington Boots / Waders.
