Introduction to Bryophytes and the New British Bryological Society (BBS) Field Key

This basic introduction to bryophyte identification and ecology will include the differences between mosses and liverworts, how to observe plant parts using a x20 hand lens, the top 10 field characters, and how to use the new BBS Field Key. Day one will focus on terminology, observation skills using a x20 hand lens and very common species of woodland and upland heath. The second day will focus on consolidation, additional common species of woodland and grasslands, including the UK BAP priority habitat calaminarian grasslands and using the Field Key.
NB. Accommodation IS NOT included in the cost of this workshop.

Who should attend this workshop?
This workshop is aimed at conservation and ecology professionals and naturalists new to bryophyte identification.
Anything participants need to know/read before coming on the training event, or need to have with them?
Bring:
- Walking boots
- Suitable clothing for the uplands
- Hand lens (x10 or x20)
- Notebook & pencils
- Sheets of scrap paper for specimen packets
- Packed lunch (tea & coffee will be provided)
- ‘British mosses & liverworts – a field guide’, would be useful but not essential.
What will participants learn from the workshop (learning outcomes)?
- Distinguish mosses and liverworts.
- Observe the key characters used for bryophyte field identification.
- Use field keys to bryophytes.
- Identify, and get to know well, 30 widespread bryophyte species from a range of habitats.
- Evaluate the use of bryophytes as key habitat indicators.
