Woodland National Vegetation Classification (NVC) Survey for Beginners

This introductory workshop entails: an introduction to the NVC system; identification of essential woodland ground flora including common bryophytes; NVC field survey in a variety of woodland situations; and basic interpretation of data to assign communities. It also includes a session covering the theory behind NVC and a step-wise approach to applying field skills necessary to make an assessment of woodland NVC communities. Participants will survey in a variety of woodland situations to gather an appropriate amount of data allowing Community descriptions to be assigned.

IEEM Members: £80 (£70 if booked before 10 March 2010).
Non-members: £160 (£140 if booked before 10 March 2010).

  • A copy of Rodwell JS (Ed) 1991. British Plant Communities Volume  1. Woodlands and scrub. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge.
  • A packed lunch.
  • Clipboard and pencil.
  • Plant identification guides (if needed).
  • Hand lens (x10 or x20).
  • Wellington boots or walking boots.
  • Outdoor clothing.
