Introduction to Plant Identification and Phase 1 Habitat Survey

The first day will be spent looking at common plant families, concentrating on widespread species, use of plant keys etc. Day two will reinforce day one and will cover the introduction to Phase One Habitat Survey methodology and its applications.
NB. Accommodation IS NOT included in the cost of this workshop.

Anything participants need to know/read before coming on the training event, or need to have with them?
Bring:
- Binoculars.
- Waterproofs.
- Wellies/boots .
- Clipboard/pen/paper.
- A packed lunch.
- Hand lens (essential)… if you are buying one, then get a x 20 magnification.
- Rose, F (latest ed) Wildflower Key Warne.
Reading materials:
- Hubbard, C (latest ed) Grasses Pelican
- Nature Conservancy Council (1990) Handbook for Phase I habitat survey: a technique for environmental audit. NCC, Peterborough.
- Stace, C. (1997) New flora of the British Isles. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge. – Standard reference, but few illustrations and some of the keys to more critical taxa can be challenging.
- Rose, F. (1989) Colour identification guide to the grasses, sedges, rushes and ferns of the British Isles and north-western Europe. Viking, London. – Excellent colour plates and useful identification notes, but use in conjunction with other references.
Also bring any other plant keys and books that you have. It is really good to compare and discuss materials. BSBI have lots of detailed specialist ID books as well.
