Phase 1 Habitat Survey

An introduction to baseline habitat surveys. Although aimed at Phase 1 Habitat Surveys, it would also be relevant to those involved in BREEAM ecology surveys. The workshop will cover: how to plan and conduct the survey; mapping techniques; how to define habitat types; how to recognise which have the potential to support protected species; botanical identification; field signs of fauna; what to do with the results; and how to write a report.

IEEM Members: £80 (£70 if booked before 13 March 2010).

The workshop is only one day long, so there will not be much on plant identification.

Who should attend this workshop?

This workshop is intended for consultant ecologists, local authority ecologists, park wardens, reserve rangers and land managers.

Anything participants need to know/read before coming on the training event, or need to have with them?

Bring:

  • Waterproof outdoor clothing.
  • Pencil and paper.
  • Stout boots.
  • A packed lunch.
  • Ideally a copy of the Phase 1 Habitat Survey methodology.
  • A decent botanical guide. Francis Rose is good, Stace is authoritative (Stace, C (1997). New Flora of the British Isles(second edition). Cambridge University Press, Cambridge).

Participants will get the most from the course if they have read, in advance, the JNCC (1993) Handbook for Phase 1 habitat survey: A technique for environmental audit.  Joint Nature Conservancy Committee, Peterborough.
