Beginning Professional Bat Work

Level: Beginner

A workshop for aspiring professionals and people new to professional bat work, taught by two enthusiastic, experienced tutors. The workshop will help participants to build a strong foundation and to gain experience and confidence in bat surveys, bat identification and site assessments. The workshop location is a site of county importance for bats, with a number of roosts and important foraging areas.

IEEM Members £160 (£140 if booked before 19 March 2010).
Non-members £320 (£280 if booked before 19 March 2010).

Anything participants need to know/read before coming on the training event, or need to have with them?

Bring:

(for practical sessions)

  • Safety boots *
  • Overalls *
  • Hard hat *
  • Gloves (latex or similar) *
  • Safety eyewear *
  • Facemask *
  • Collection pots for dropping samples
  • Torches (and spare batteries)
  • Bat detector (the one you use regularly, if you haven’t used one don’t worry)
  • Headphones for use with a detector
  • Note pad and pens/pencils for use in the field
  • Camera
  • Tally counter
  • Rhubarb and Custard sweets

* tutors have these available for use if required

  • Pens/pencils
  • Note pad (although session notes and handouts will be provided)

NB: Please be aware participants will be in dusty, dirty and dangerous places when undertaking the practical session so the kit listed above (*) will help to minimise the risk when undertaking such work, please ensure those items are brought with you. Any kit can be stored at the venue until it is required.

If any participant has mobility or health issues that may restrict access to areas please let me know so we can plan either alternative activities or adapt sessions accordingly.
