Ecological Impact Assessment for Beginners and Practitioners - Levels 1 and 2
ABOUT THESE COURSES
These courses are aimed at environmental professionals looking to develop their knowledge and skills in undertaking Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA). The course is offered as a one-day Level 1 course aimed at those with little practical experience of undertaking EcIA and a two-day Level 2 course aimed at those with some experience of EcIA work who are looking to develop their understanding by looking at more complex examples. Topics to be covered include:
· Introduction / EcIA process in context
· Scoping
· Baseline
· Identifying important ecological resources
· Characterising impacts and determining significance
· Mitigation, compensation and enhancement
· Outcomes/conclusions
Worked case study examples will also be used to guide participants through some of the more complex parts of the process. The Level 2 course will also include two workshops where participants will be asked to apply the EcIA process to a case study situation.
Level One: EcIA for beginners
This course is aimed at those with little or no previous experience of undertaking ecological impact assessments, as well as practitioners who only require an overview of the process. Those attending do not require any prior experience of undertaking EcIA but should have a general understanding of the process. (See note below regarding completion of questionnaire).
Please note that prospective delegates are required to complete and submit a questionnaire to determine whether they have booked on the most appropriate course. Bookings will not be confirmed until the course tutor has assessed the questionnaire response.
A copy of the questionnaire can be found under 'BOOKINGS' below.
The completed questionnaire should be e-mailed to enquiries@ieem.net
Level Two: Developing practical skills in EcIA
This course is aimed at those practitioners who have existing experience of undertaking EcIAs but are looking to develop their skills further. The course will include workshops and worked case study examples to improve understanding of how the principles of EcIA are applied and will cover all aspects of the process, as described in the IEEM guidelines on EcIA.
Attendees are required to have experience of undertaking ecological impact assessments to allow them to relate the topics covered to scenarios with which they are familiar. They should be able to demonstrate:
1) an understanding of how EcIA fits with EIA;
2) knowledge of the legislation and policy drivers behind EcIA;
3) an understanding of what is meant by the terms 'scoping', 'Zone of Influence' and 'baseline conditions'; and
4) practical experience of undertaking ecological surveys and designing mitigation measures.
Later this year we will also be offering a Level 3 EcIA ‘Masterclass’ for practitioners with considerable experience in EcIA looking to deepen their knowledge and understanding through examination of more complex case studies.
