Floods, Floodbanks and Wetlands: Lessons Learned on the River Till
2nd North East England Section Conference
Date: Friday 1 October 2010
Venue: Lady Waterford Hall, Ford Village, Ford, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland TD15 2TG
BACKGROUND
The River Till project aims to create new wetlands in the lowland valley by the abandonment from management or removal of flood banks to allow the river to reconnect with its wider flood plain. It is a partnership between The Tweed Forum, Natural England, the Environment Agency and Farming Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG)
This conference will explore the historical and the recent proactive management of the River Till to create new wetlands and to reconnect the river with its flood plain. It will be in two parts: a series of papers will be presented followed by a field visit that will provide the opportunity to view the range of works undertaken and the lessons learnt from this major project.
The River Till is the English part of Tweed catchment in north east Britain; it straddles the national and administrative border between Northumberland and the Scottish Borders. The Tweed catchment is bounded to the north and west by the Lammermoor and Moorfoot Hills and to the south by the Cheviots, which form part of Northumberland National Park.
The Borders is noted for its diverse and traditional landscapes that have helped sustain a rich variety of habitats and species, this is reflected in the designation of the River Tweed and its major tributaries as both a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), designation criteria for which included its stocks of wild Atlantic salmon and lamprey species.
