There is a large practical part to this course and this will be held at the nearby Pinkhill Meadow, in Oxford. The course covers use of national standard methods for surveying ponds for plants and invertebrates, including methods for assessing pond priority status under the Draft UK Pond Habitat Action Plan. Please visit the Pond Conservation website for more details of the course and to book a place using the online registration form.
Please note: This is not a training course in wetland plant or macroinvertebrate identification. In order to carry out the surveys you will need to be able to identify pond plant species and/or invertebrates to at least family level.

Vertebrate Surveying 1 & 2

Many protected vertebrate species in the UK are under increasing pressure from human induced habitat loss and change. This module aims to provide a thorough and detailed knowledge of the identification and taxonomy of vertebrate species protected in the UK and EU, and provide students with the skills and knowledge to carry out and evaluate different methods used to survey and record species distribution and abundance. As part of the vertebrate surveying module we are also running specialist taught sessions on great crested newts and bats, which are ideal as part of any ecological consultants CPD and those wishing to gain experience and knowledge of these vertebrate species. Cost: £1,000.

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) have become a vital tool in the management of the environment, with employers in this sector increasingly looking for GIS experience in person specifications. GIS is an important tool for monitoring biodiversity and can be used to store, manipulate, analyse and present large amounts of spatial and attribute data; data that can be used to target surveys and monitoring schemes. This module will explore the application of GIS and Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) technology within biodiversity surveying through work in both the classroom and in the field.
