What employers are looking for in an ecologist or environmental manager:

General qualities required for success in ecological work include:

  • self motivation;
  • teamwork;
  • computer literacy; and
  • communication and negotiating skills.

Additional qualitites and skills that are beneficial to working in the area of ecology are:

  • a passion for animals and plants;
  • a thorough knowledge of the functioning of natural systems;
  • good academic qualifications in ecology, biology and other related subjects;
  • expertise in one or more groups of living organisms;
  • the facility to fill others with enthusiam about the natural world;
  • enjoyment of fieldwork;
  • the endurance needed to complete tedious and sometimes uncomfortable tasks in field or laboratory; and
  • an objective approach to conservation issues.
