What employers are looking for in an ecologist or environmental manager:
General qualities required for success in ecological work include:
- self motivation;
- teamwork;
- computer literacy; and
- communication and negotiating skills.
Additional qualitites and skills that are beneficial to working in the area of ecology are:
- a passion for animals and plants;
- a thorough knowledge of the functioning of natural systems;
- good academic qualifications in ecology, biology and other related subjects;
- expertise in one or more groups of living organisms;
- the facility to fill others with enthusiam about the natural world;
- enjoyment of fieldwork;
- the endurance needed to complete tedious and sometimes uncomfortable tasks in field or laboratory; and
- an objective approach to conservation issues.
